It’s an exciting time to be a Swarthmore resident and it is an honor to be on the ballot next Tuesday, November 2, for Swarthmore Borough Council.
As your councilwoman for the next four years, I hope to have the opportunity to provide skillful fiduciary oversight, ethical, and equitable decision-making, and inclusive processes that galvanize our community at this pivotal time.
A letter last week stated that a voter’s mail-in ballot took 20 days to arrive. I’m guessing that the writer based the calculation on the date given in the PA State Ballot Tracking system that allows voters to find out the status of their mail-in request.
A reminder about the upcoming election on November 2. This year’s ballot is a particularly long one, taking up a double-sided sheet of paper with 16 different races, plus a second single-sided sheet with 9 Yes/No questions about whether judges should be retained for another term. We wanted to give you advance notice that filling them out may take a while, and lines may form at the polling places on Election Day.
It took 20 days for my vote-by-mail ballot to make the arduous journey from Media to Swarthmore. I hope it will make the 15-day window to arrive back by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
The Delaware County, Radnor, and Central Delaware County Leagues of Women Voters urge readers to call or email their Pennsylvania House and Senate members asking them to support PA House Bill 22 and Senate Bill 222, the Legislative and Congressional Redistricting Act.
The Pennsylvania primary election on May 18 is extremely important. Two proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot address the ability of the state legislature to override a governor’s declaration of an emergency.
If not for Black support in the Democratic primaries, Joe Biden would not have won his party’s nomination. And, if not for overwhelming Black support in several key swing states during the presidential election, Donald Trump would have been sworn in for his second term, and Joe Biden would not be our new president. All Americans owe Black voters a debt of gratitude. It’s time to start repaying that debt.
Don’t you think it is time to vet all men and women who are running for president, as is done for all those nominated to be cabinet members? Congress could run background checks.
Upon hearing of the impending victory of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States, my father and I picked up an American flag, draped it over our shoulders, and went out for a walk to celebrate. As we walked however, we encountered multiple people who were unnerved by it, because they believed us to be right-wing agitators.
Mark Twain said that when the helm of the ship of state is in pirate hands it is the duty of patriots to mutiny. Patriots have an opportunity to join a constitutionally approved mutiny on November 3.
The League of Women Voters of Delaware County wants every registered voter to have an opportunity to vote, but also to assure voters that no one will be able to vote twice. There has never been massive, organized voter fraud involving mail-in ballots in any state, even though some states have had vote-by-mail for decades.
As a team leader for Girl Up, I am looking for any possible way to inform people about the importance of voting, especially for those between the ages of 18 and 24. I’m also focused on getting people registered. As an organization, we aim to make voting simple, stress free, and available to all!
When the mail-in ballot count, powered by Democratic voters, shows a reversal of the preliminary election night outcome, all hell will break loose. Buckle up, America, you ain’t never seen anything like it before.
The right to vote is absolutely fundamental to the effective functioning of a democracy. It is the most cherished right of every American citizen. Now, even the President of the United States has joined this not-so-subtle attempt to disenfranchise some citizens.
If you are registered to vote in Pennsylvania, you may now vote in the primary and general elections by using a mail-in ballot, without needing an excuse. The deadline for applying for your no-excuse mail-in ballot is 5 p.m. on May 26. Then, for your vote to count, the election board must receive your completed ballot by 8 p.m. on June 2.
As mayors and former mayors of communities in Delaware County, we write to urge everyone to vote for former Swarthmore Mayor Rick Lowe to serve as a judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Delaware County. We believe that Rick possesses all the personal and professional qualifications needed to be an exceptional judge.
Tuesday, November 5 is Municipal Election Day when voters cast their ballots for an array of county, township, borough, and judicial offices. Municipal elections have traditionally low turnout, and this is a shame because those we elect make important decisions that affect our everyday lives, on matters like police and fire protection, zoning, building codes, parks and open space, waste disposal, public education, and how we pay for it all.
In next Tuesday’s primary election, there will be more candidates running for Delaware County Court of Common Pleas than there are seats available. That’s true for both parties. Democrats will be asked to choose four candidates from a list of eleven, and Republicans will select four from a list of ten.
