The result of ignoring red flags

To the Editor,

Don’t you think it is time to vet all men and women who are running for president, as is done for all those nominated to be cabinet members? Congress could run background checks. Donald J. Trump would have raised not one but many red flags: serious debt, hiding tax returns, bankruptcies, lost lawsuits, questionable relationships with foreign dignitaries, etc. You can’t adopt a child unless your history is “clean,” but you can run our huge country???

This deficiency is why we have as president — in the world’s model democracy — a man who is politically ignorant, as well as an incompetent businessman, who turned out to be a narcissist who ruled from his gut while ignoring norms and laws. Called by his former personal lawyer “a crook and a cheat,” he also surrounded himself with other crooks, several of whom are now in prison. But undermining our democracy — to the delight of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping — with constant lies (“alternative facts”) and calling the media, our vital and sacrosanct institution, “enemy of the people,” might be the biggest sin of all.

D.J.T.’s current, illegal negation of the election results is only adding to my utter discomfort, and I am hoping the many sycophantic Republican senators and members of the administration who are still supporting him will stop it already. D.J.T.’s impeding of a peaceful transition of power is truly scandalous and will have possibly serious results.

How could we get into all this?

But, we will get through this!
