Songs of Freedom

Swarthmore United Methodist Church has hosted several educational fundraising events in support of Justice for Our Neighbors of the Delaware Valley (JFON), which provides pro bono immigration support services. The church will hold another one, “Songs of Freedom,” on Saturday, October 16, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., on the church lawn.

Rotary Supports Students from Chester Through CTEP

Stefan Roots writes about last week’s fundraiser for the Chester Trades Education Project (CTEP), sponsored by the Rotary Club of Swarthmore. Thanks are due to the Rotary Clubs of Swarthmore and Chester, and to Delaware County Community College and the Chester Housing Authority, for helping to bring trades education back to Chester.

Raising Donations for JFON

The Swarthmore United Methodist Church will hold a fundraising event, “Songs of Freedom,” on Saturday, October 16, at 3 p.m., to which the community is invited. Food trucks and members of the church who are talented bakers will offer items for sale, and cash donations will also be accepted: all proceeds from the event will go to support JFON.

2021 Resolution Run

Swarthmore Recreation Association presents its first ever “Resolution Run,” to be held on January 1, 2021. In past years, the association has held an annual New Year’s Day 5K race. This year’s Resolution Run will be different: It will be virtual, and it is not limited to 5 kilometers.

Tenth Panther Pajama Run

With so much of work and school conducted virtually these days, many people are spending more time in their pajamas than ever before. The Panther Pajama Run offers the opportunity to run a 5K in pajamas too.

Florida by Bike

In the summer of 2018, when my brother Charlie and his friend, Walter Clauss, were 15 years old, they rode their bikes to the Jersey Shore. It was a quick day trip, but it felt like an adventure — especially to their parents. As soon as they got back, these adrenaline-chasing teenagers were ready for their next big thing. “We should bike to Florida!” they told each other. “We should” quickly became “We are going to,” much to the amusement and disbelief of friends and family. The boys’ trip now had a name: “Ride for the A’s.”

Support for Books with Diverse Protagonists

A check for $13,000 was presented to the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District at the School Board’s meeting on November 25 by Frannie Reilly and Elizabeth Ross, president and vice president of the Foundation for the Wallingford-Swarthmore Schools. The money, which will be equally distributed among grades K-12, will support R.E.A.D: Reading for Education, Acceptance, and Diversity. Also at the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Lisa Palmer informed the district that, since the beginning of the school year, eight cases of pertussis (whooping cough) have been diagnosed among district students.

SHHS Artist Perks up Class of 2021 Fundraising

Strath Haven High School junior Lauren St. Claire’s beautiful graphic creations will help the SHHS Class of 2021 with its coffee fundraiser this holiday season. She created three coffee label designs in my Graphic Design 3 class using a drawing tablet and iMac computer. The Class of 2021 is selling three different types of coffee, all inspired by student experiences.

Smokin’ Good: Save November 17 for Barbecue Cook-Off

Circle the afternoon of Sunday, November 17, on your Fall festival calendar. That’s the date when The Swarthmorean presents its first barbecue cook-off in the alley next to waR3house3, 100 Park Avenue, Suite WH3. Between 3 and 8 p.m., there will be beef, pork, and who knows what other forms of meaty goodness on the grills of ten local amateur BBQ masters as they compete for Swarthmore’s highest grilling honor. If you want to be one of them, act quickly! The cost to enter is $50.

Make Tracks to Panther Pajama Run

The Foundation for Wallingford-Swarthmore Schools invites all local runners and walkers to enter its 2019 Panther Pajama Run on Saturday, November 9. This year‘s event raises funds for the Foundation’s newest initiative: Reading for Education, Acceptance, and Diversity — READ — which aims to upgrade and increase diversity in WSSD schools’ library collections.

Benefit at WH3 for Exonerated Ex-Prisoner

Elmer Daniels was released in December, 2018 from Howard R. Young Correctional Institute in Wilmington, Del. It was the day after his 57th birthday, and the first day he had spent as a free man since turning 18. After serving 39 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, Daniels is living and working in Elkton, Md. A fundraiser this Saturday night at waR3house3 will raise money to help Mr. Daniels buy a used car. A donation of at $20 per person is suggested.

Families Running aHEAD of Cancer

The McGowan and Greto families have been dealt a card that no one wants in their hands: a cancer diagnosis. The two Delaware County families will be participating in the HEADstrong Foundation’s Running aHEAD of Cancer 5k in Swarthmore on Sunday, September 22. Each has its own personal ties to the foundation and reason for making a team. 

Luminaria Fundraiser Lights up the Town

Members of the Wallingford-Swarthmore community, cast your minds back to the evening of Tuesday, January 1, 2019, and you should be able to picture how beautiful the streets looked, lined with glowing luminaria. Wallingford and Nether Providence neighborhoods that who recently joined Swarthmore in this annual event, some who light their luminaria on January 1 and some at other times over the holidays. Regardless of time or place, the fruition of the 2018-2019 Luminaria fundraiser was a beautiful sight. Now it is time to thank everybody involved and share with the community the success of the event.
