The Value of Learning—and Having Fun. Coach Terry Lynch on His Nearly Three Decades with Town Soccer

If you have had young kids involved in sports activities with the Swarthmore Recreation Association (SRA), chances are you too have seen Coach Terry in action. Terry Lynch has long been a fixture on our local soccer- and tee-ball fields. With an infectious energy, Terry has dedicated his Saturdays to teaching kids the basics of soccer and baseball, emphasizing the importance of having fun. Greg Hoy chatted with Terry this past week after learning he was planning to (mostly) hang up his black cleats after 27 years on the field.

A New Digital Experience Is Coming to The Swarthmorean

This month, we’ll be unveiling our new e-edition of The Swarthmorean. It will completely replace our current website. At the core of the experience will be a robust digital replica of the paper (called “page view”) — an online experience that looks and feels exactly like the print paper. The new e-edition will offer some key enhancements that we think you’ll love.

2021 Resolution Run

Swarthmore Recreation Association presents its first ever “Resolution Run,” to be held on January 1, 2021. In past years, the association has held an annual New Year’s Day 5K race. This year’s Resolution Run will be different: It will be virtual, and it is not limited to 5 kilometers.

How They Met: Gary and Trish Sheff

Sometimes it’s hard to see what’s right in front of you. Trish and Gary first met in elementary school when they were seven years old. This was in Ardsley, New York, a town even smaller than Swarthmore, where Trish had lived all her life. A skinny kid from the Bronx with a giant head of hair, Gary moved to Ardsley in second grade, joining a class that already had a Larry and Barry. He and Trish quickly became friends. But it would take them 33 years to realize they were perfect for each other.

50 Second Hero

The other week, I was in Texas when I received a push notification from the Nest Cam we have keeping an eye on our yard. The notification arrived just after the school bus would have dropped the kids off, so I tuned in to say hi. It took me a second or two to realize what was going on. My son was throwing the football with the UPS guy.
