The idea of a second home — at the shore, on a lake, or in the mountains — has a certain appeal. But my husband Greg Brown and I have studiously avoided purchasing such a place, thinking that once we do, we’ll be stuck going to that same place over and over again instead of travelling. However, that doesn’t keep us from checking out the real estate in fun places we visit! This summer we made a car trip to western North Carolina where we did look at some homes, in case we ever change our minds.

The Wallingford-Swarthmore administration has extended an invitation for interested parents to join the task force that will explore the issue of adolescent sleep and the consequences of sleep deprivation and the possibility of delaying school start times. Meanwhile, in a move likely to be celebrated by 3rd graders throughout the district, the School Board voted 8-0 at its September 9 meeting to eliminate loss of recess as a penalty for student misconduct.

Like all 67 Pennsylvania counties, Delaware County is under mandate to replace its voting machines by the end of 2019. In Delco, that means goodbye to the Danaher voting machines in place since 2005, which had notorious setup and reliability problems, and anyway are at the end of their useful life. Replacement of these machines has taken on added weight in light of recent election system hacking efforts.

It was first reported in the Delaware County Daily Times that The Larimer Beer Company was almost open and you’d think no one in Chester saw the article. About a month after the Daily Times ran their article, the brewery had opened and I stuck my head in early one evening to see what was going on inside. I met the owners, had a couple great beers, and created a blog post to simply say I stopped in and we’re going to do an interview.

Recently, Swarthmore Borough issued notice to owners of adjoining properties at 311 Cedar Lane and 406 College Avenue that the structures are unsafe for human occupancy, that rehabilitation is not feasible due to the degree of deterioration, and that the structures should therefore be demolished, according to Borough Manager Jane Billings. The owner of 311 Cedar Lane has appealed the notice.

“No photos,” said the signs posted everywhere at the Antiques Roadshow. As an avid photographer, I felt as if I had just sat down for a long-anticipated feast only to be told that eating was forbidden. But the atmosphere was so festive that I could almost forget my deprivation on this beautiful June day.

Though the lines were long, even at our 7:30 a.m. entrance time, the mood was very jolly. We were all lottery winners, my husband and I and about 3,000 others using our free tickets to join in this very long day. Everyone was happy to be at the Roadshow, even the harried, unpaid appraisers, many familiar to us from our years of viewing PBS’s most-watched ongoing TV series.

On Memorial Day, my good friend Alex Schaff and I set out from Swarthmore for the enchanting hills and meadows of New England, with the goal of visiting and talking with dairy farmers and cheesemakers. Alex, who suggested the trip, is a prospective veterinarian and a master’s student of dairy science at Colorado State University; I work as a cheesemonger at DiBruno’s in Philadelphia. So one could say the idea didn’t just come out of the blue!

Like quite a few of their fellow Swarthmoreans, Jill Gaieski and Lori Knauer enjoy a glass of good wine. Together, they’ve also pursued the Certified Specialist in Wine designation at the Wine School in Philadelphia, a serious program that incorporates aspects of oenology and oenophilia. Now, out of their appreciation of wine, its variety and lore, the two are working to bring Swarthmore a wine bar and bistro named Village Vine, which they plan to open next year in the former Compendium location at 6 Park Avenue.
