The Swarthmore Co-op will present a summer Dinner and a Movie Night series, starting Friday, August 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. The grilling starts at 6; the movie more like 7, all on Lincoln Way by the Co-op. Admission costs $5 per kid and $10 per adult, with proceeds going toward needed refrigeration system repairs at the food market.
Last month, Joel Siwik took over as Swarthmore’s Postmaster, replacing acting Postmaster Michael Keller (who took Siwik’s place as Postmaster in Chester). Appropriately for a town where most mail is delivered by letter carriers on foot, Siwik comes from a background as a postman.
From now through July 26, children in Delaware County can pick up a free passport-style booklet at their local library and journey across Delco to any and all 26 member libraries in the county. Journey Across Delco is geared towards children in pre-school and early elementary school, who can participate in various activities at each library, check out a new book, and have their passport stamped.
Swarthmoreans are featured artists among the upcoming programs of the Brandywine River Museum of Art this summer. The Museum Explorer’s family workshops, held on Thursdays through August 1 at 10 a.m. invite adults and children to discover the art of stories for a nominal fee.
Save the date and start working on your act. On Saturday, July 27, the Young People’s Theatre Workshop is creating, coordinating and presenting Children of the Wind, an Arts-A-Thon to raise money and hope for migrant children detained at the southern U.S. border.
Swarthmorean Robert Scott recently mentioned beaver sightings on Crum Creek, where the toothy furbearers abounded in the time of the Lenni Lenape, but were absent for decades and have only returned in the past few years. The lower trail is all but inaccessible due to tree fall, but walking downstream from the “Crumhenge” meadow near the SEPTA viaduct, Scott said, he had seen four beavers and their lodges during his evening walks along the trail.

Connecting the community through music and art, Community Arts Center’s annual Tie-Dye Music Festival will take place rain or shine on Saturday, July 13 from 2 to 7 p.m. The free family event, presented by Ginger March and J. Rossi, and sponsored by Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, features music all day, tie-dye activities, vendors, raffles and food on the side lawn of CAC at 414 Plush Mill Road in Wallingford.
15 year old Gabe Ma’s Eagle Scout project focused on the creation of a switchback trail to high ground in the Saul Preserve in Rose Valley, and creation of a new trail which will wind along a ridge overlooking the floodplain of the creek through the preserve.

Like quite a few of their fellow Swarthmoreans, Jill Gaieski and Lori Knauer enjoy a glass of good wine. Together, they’ve also pursued the Certified Specialist in Wine designation at the Wine School in Philadelphia, a serious program that incorporates aspects of oenology and oenophilia. Now, out of their appreciation of wine, its variety and lore, the two are working to bring Swarthmore a wine bar and bistro named Village Vine, which they plan to open next year in the former Compendium location at 6 Park Avenue.

Preregistration for $30 is still available for the 22nd annual Swarthmore Lions Independence Eve 8K (5 mile) and 2 ½ Mile Walk. The race will go off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening, July 3, on a new course, covering a relatively flat 8K route through the tree-lined neighborhoods of Swarthmore borough. The 2½ Mile Walk route follows the first loop of the 8K.
Last Thursday morning, June 20, Swarthmore postal employees paused before beginning their delivery routes, opening customer windows, and processing mail, in order to honor three of their colleagues. Swarthmore mail carriers John Fanelli, William Kane and Francis “Billy” Raymond were inducted into the Million Mile Club, each receiving an award only given by the United States Postal Service to mail carriers who have either driven or walked one million miles or have worked 30 years with the company without incident.
Dr. Dennis Hoffman retired on June 26, almost exactly 50 years since beginning his dental practice in Swarthmore. Over the decades at the 107 Rutgers Avenue office, Dr. Hoffman has served several generations of Swarthmore patients.
