Paving the Way for a Smoother Borough

Swarthmore Borough Council voted at its Monday meeting to approve awarding of a seasonal paving contract to contractor Glasgow Inc., for just under $100,000. Although Glasgow was not the absolute low bidder, it was the “lowest responsible bidder” as required by code in awarding this type of contract.

More than Occasionally Yours

Thirty years ago this month, Scott and Theresa Richardson were ready to open a catering business. “We looked at West Chester and Media, but we thought there was more of a need for food in Swarthmore,” Theresa said, “that the college could be a catering client and students would come down to find a place to get takeout.”

“We walked around the town and met up in front of 8 Park Avenue, which had a For Rent sign in the window. And we made the phone call to Bill Willis, who owned the building, and a couple of days later we came back to sign the lease. It was April Fool’s Day of 1989. We asked each other ‘are we sure we want to do this?’ and the answer was yes,” Scott said in a recent interview at 8 Park Avenue, for nearly 30 years the home of their restaurant and catering business Occasionally Yours.

Swarthmore Public Library: 90 Years at the Heart of the Community (Part 2)

For two years following the 1950 fire, the library occupied temporary quarters in the former Swarthmore Telephone Exchange (also called the “old Bell Building”) at 215 Harvard Avenue. Once again, the community rallied to support the library, with donations of books pouring in from private citizens, Swarthmore College, and many other institutions. In 1952, the librarians’ hopes were fulfilled when the library re-opened in its spacious quarters in the newly constructed Borough Hall.

Two guest speakers, Delaware County-based criminal defense attorney Wana Saadzoi and Montgomery County Assistant Public Defender Lee Awbrey, fielded questions from about 25 attendees about two main topics: The discretion of the people implementing our criminal justice systems and the effects of frequent pretrial detention and lengthy probation/parole supervision.

Swarthmore Public Library: 90 Years at the Heart of the Community (Part 1)

When the Swarthmore Public Library officially opened its doors on May 17, 1929, the concept of a community library was still somewhat uncommon. In Swarthmore, though, the idea to start a library had been brewing for at least a year, thanks to several groups of forward-thinking women. In 1928, one group opened a children’s library. A small lending library followed, set up by — and for — the Women’s Club of Swarthmore. By the end of 1928, the Swarthmore Public Library Association was formed.
