Swarthmore College Basketball Player Builds Connection with SPNDS Kindergarten

At their home game against Franklin & Marshall College on February 8, the top-ranked and undefeated Swarthmore College men’s basketball team was surprised to see a crowd of young fans decked out in matching Swarthmore College T-shirts cheering them on. It was not a school-organized event, just the effort of one passionate kindergarten teacher, her enthusiastic students, and their parents in support of No. 40, Nate Shafer ’20. Shafer started visiting Sheri Carney’s kindergarten class at Swarthmore Presbyterian Nursery Day School during his sophomore year, as part of an Introduction to Education course. He was only supposed to be there for one semester, but Shafer found himself inspired by Carney’s skill and her excitement for teaching.

2019: An Inventory

How to inventory a whole year? What to remind you of, and what to skip? What would you rather forget, but maybe shouldn’t? What have you already forgotten that might interest you to recall? Collecting (recollecting) these happenings and lives and milestones is a way to consider what we have accomplished and aspired to and worried about as a community, as we take the first steps into 2020. To think about where we have succeeded, where we have more work to do, and where we might want to start all over again.

Strath Haven Golfers End Main Line Dominance

For the past two decades, Conestoga and Radnor have ruled the Central League when it comes to high school golf. Along the way, Haven’s deep squad of seniors and underclassmen scored impressive wins over the Main Line powers.

Friday Night Game to Honor Haven’s First Championship Team

Twenty years ago, Strath Haven High School won the first of two consecutive class AAA state football championships, riding the crest of an incredible wave of success that also included 94 straight District One victories, and Central League and District One championships every year from 1996 through 2003. Both past and future football glories are on the minds of the founders of the Haven Gridiron Club, which was recently formed by alumni and parents of current team members, not just to celebrate the glory days, but also to contribute to future successes.

Swarthmore Recreation Association Bocce held its 30th season in June at our home bocce court on Wellesley Road. The season culminated with the traditional tournament and BBQ on June 25. Thirty players participated during the season, including two first time players. The bocce was, as usual, quite spirited and congenial though, as will be described later in this article, some disputes developed this year among the players regarding the use of analytics during play.

Fili's Finest

Brian Fili is known to some as the 8th grade mathematics teacher at Strath Haven Middle School, to others as the high school baseball coach, and, outside the community, as a member of the newest class inducted in February into Villanova University’s Varsity Club Hall of Fame for his excellence as a baseball player.

Swarthmore Swim Club Gets Salty

At its annual membership meeting in February, the Swarthmore Swim Club announced the pending conversion of its lap pool to a saltwater chlorination system. The change will affect the six-lane lap pool, where swim team competitions are held and lap swimmers paddle for their 1000 lap shirts.
