Opening Day for Nether-Swarthmore Baseball and Softball
What an opening day for Nether-Swarthmore Baseball and Softball!
A Garden City fire truck blazed the trail for a parade led by players from the new Iron Hill Buddy Ball program and a group of league members who carried the flag. T-ballers hopped, skipped and jumped their way to Hepford Field with the Rookies, Minors, Softball and Major players behind them. At Hepford, high schoolers Sabrina Caputo and Marissa Perri sang an a cappella version of the Star Spangled Banner.
NSBS President Ed Bonett, welcomed the assembled crowd and introduced guest speakers Tommy Greene and Mickey Morandini. The former Phillies spoke about the value of practice and perseverance in the game of baseball, and the importance of unplugging devices and playing outdoors. Morandini and Greene simultaneously threw out the first pitch to catchers Matthew Caputo and Chase Shuster, then stayed to sign autographs while players and families enjoyed hot dogs. More than 500 Nether Swarthmore Baseball and Softball players will be on the ballfields from now until mid-June.
