There have been rumors circulating that our beautiful old theater will be torn down and replaced. The truth is the Swarthmore Ballet Theatre building has been renovated!

The Gentrification of the Ville
I read with interest Shannon Elliot’s piece regarding the planned condominium development replacing the two buildings at 102-104 and 110-112 Park Avenue. In my opinion, this project is a poison pill for the vibrancy of the downtown area.

Questioning the integrity of borough council
It was not reported in The Swarthmorean, but there were shocking scenes about an hour into the July 26 Swarthmore Borough Council meeting, as a discussion of a towing contract descended into chaos, and a recess was called to attempt to restore order.
About mask mandates
As a mom, grandmother, and longtime teacher, I had hoped that the district’s Covid safety plan would mandate masks for all K-12 students and adults while on school premises or transportation. My main concern with the plan that the district recently adopted is the phrase “should wear masks” to describe the masking requirements for unvaccinated middle- and high-school kids.
Where did all the pollinators go?

A moment in my life
Dear neighbors, imagine this if you can. Tomorrow, your alarm clock rings. You open your eyes and see that everything is black. You realize that you have become totally blind.
On reading the report of a Strath Haven senior student’s experiencing bullying (July 23rd Swarthmorean), I received evidence of significant prejudice right in our midst.
Even though I lived in Swarthmore for only six years, so many fond and warm memories continue to come to the front of my mind as I look through the time telescope into the past.
Has evidence of climate change become undeniable?
We have a chance to bend the curve and potentially avert irreversible disastrous consequences, through changes in our individual behavior and a coordinated worldwide governmental response. We must seize this chance, for the good of all life on planet Earth.

Thank you to all who came to our Swarthmore Independence Day celebration, which we were able to hold again after last year’s temporary break. While we were a little rusty, it was once again a great morning.
I began to question the paper’s position on freedom of speech, divergence of thought, and acceptance of voices. Did the paper have a political slant that welcomed some voices and rejected or questioned others?
The way I see it, the current debate about the Covanta incinerator in Chester is skewed, warped, and hysterical.
I’m ready to be part of a long-term plan to improve air quality in Chester, to ensure that the Delaware County landfill Delco is used equitably and ethically, and to put us all on the road to zero waste. It’s a LONG road. I’ve started. I hope you will too.
