On Monday, April 22, at 8:23 a.m., firefighters had no further to respond than outside the firehouse bay doors for a reported “township trash truck on fire.” The borough’s trash removal contractor, collecting rubbish from Swarthmore residents, discovered that the contents of their truck were on fire. They drove the truck to the firehouse after first calling 911 to report that the content of their vehicle was burning. Swarthmore Police immediately instructed the operator to move the vehicle away from the firehouse bay doors to allow fire apparatus to exit. Firefighters first unsuccessfully attempted to douse the fire by applying water to the contents within the truck. The trash truck operator was then instructed to dump the contents of the vehicle on the ground where it was finally extinguished. Swarthmore Public Works employees then assisted with the front end loader in refilling the trash truck with the now very wet rubbish for final disposition. Photo by Joe Hudyma.
