The parent of a Strath Haven High School senior spoke at this week’s school board meeting, alerting board members to problems with some midyear transcripts sent to colleges as part of applications for admission. Our article outlines the errors and reports on the district’s response.
Dr. Kristopher Brown will be leaving his position as principal of Strath Haven High School (SHHS) in January 2020. In her report at the Wallingford-Swarthmore School Board meeting on Monday night, Superintendent Lisa A. Palmer announced that she hopes to fill the position on an interim basis with someone from within the district. She anticipates naming an interim principal in the next few weeks.
Strath Haven High School Principal Kristopher Brown will be the next District Equity Officer of Abington Township. “This is a very unique opportunity to do work that I am incredibly passionate about in the community I grew up in and the school where my passion to become an educator was born,” Brown wrote in a letter to parents. “It has truly been a fantastic opportunity for me to work in this community, and I am better for having had the chance to be here and work to continue to provide a great experience for the students and the Wallingford-Swarthmore community.”
Eight cases of pertussis have been confirmed in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District since the beginning of the school year, according to Superintendent Lisa Palmer. The diagnosed students have been from Swarthmore-Rutledge School, Strath Haven Middle School, and Strath Haven High School. The highly contagious disease, which affects the lungs, is commonly known as whooping cough because of the sound sufferers sometimes make after a long fit of coughing.
Strath Haven High School junior Lauren St. Claire’s beautiful graphic creations will help the SHHS Class of 2021 with its coffee fundraiser this holiday season. She created three coffee label designs in my Graphic Design 3 class using a drawing tablet and iMac computer. The Class of 2021 is selling three different types of coffee, all inspired by student experiences.
Since the 1970s, A Better Chance - Strath Haven has provided educational opportunities for students from across the U.S. to attend Strath Haven High School and reside in Swarthmore during the school year. ABC Scholars are selected among applicants for the program through a highly competitive selection process, which looks at academic and leadership potential as well as need. This year’s incoming class includes two 9th graders, Amayah Wade and Assane Wade (yes, they are twins, and come from Landover, Md.) and 10th grader Teghan Sydnor of Voorhees, N.J., who joined ABC when a student transferred to another school.
For the past two decades, Conestoga and Radnor have ruled the Central League when it comes to high school golf. That changed this fall when the Strath Haven golf team won the school’s first-ever league championship, posting a perfect 13-0 record. Along the way, Haven’s deep squad of seniors and underclassmen scored impressive wins over the Main Line powers.
At its Monday night meeting this week, the Wallingford-Swarthmore School Board authorized the hiring of Mary Figura as WSSD’s its first-ever assistant to the superintendent for management services. Superintendent Dr. Lisa Palmer said that compared to similar school districts, Wallingford-Swarthmore has had a “lean administrative team.” Figura is currently director of curriculum, instruction and technology in the Pine Grove (Schuylkill County) School District.
Twenty years ago, Strath Haven High School won the first of two consecutive class AAA state football championships, riding the crest of an incredible wave of success that also included 94 straight District One victories, and Central League and District One championships every year from 1996 through 2003. Both past and future football glories are on the minds of the founders of the Haven Gridiron Club, which was recently formed by alumni and parents of current team members, not just to celebrate the glory days, but also to contribute to future successes.
Swarthmorean Summer Travel
For four weeks this June and July, I called the University of Pittsburgh home as I participated in the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Global and International Studies. At this free, residential summer program, I was among 50 students, all rising juniors and seniors from high schools across Pennsylvania.
Sunny skies smiled upon the Strath Haven Class of 2019 on June 6 and 7 as they came to the end of their school journey in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, and took the first steps into what’s next.
Thursday’s Commemoration convened the seniors and their families in the dappled evening light of the Scott Outdoor Amphitheater, and Friday afternoon brought more brilliance as the class converged on Neumann College for graduation ceremonies.

On Sunday, May 5, works by 21 student artists from Strath Haven High School were displayed at the 2019 Congressional Art Competition Show for the 5th District of Pennsylvania. The show at Utility Works in Lansdowne featured 133 works created by students from 12 area high schools.
The time has come for Strath Haven High School to say goodbye to Relay for Life, and to welcome Mini-Thon as our major fundraising event for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.
