The Boards of Directors of the Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association and the Park Avenue Community Center join in announcing the Senior Association as a Founding Partner in a new Community Center for Swarthmore and surrounding communities. The Senior Association will donate $100,000 toward the establishment of the PAC Center and will subsequently make the Center its permanent home.

This admonition comes from the Third Act Project, an online community and information resource for older men. Linton Stables, President of the Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association, was awarded the 2020 Swarthmore Lions Club Citizen of the Year Award. He got involved in community work when he was living in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood in the 1990s, but his is involvement in Swarthmore came about more accidentally. This is a story of how his community contributions evolved, and his affinity for fundraising, which he calls “telling a story that shows you what the opportunities are for you to be generous.”
Last winter, the Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association (SSCA) was gearing up for what they expected to be their best-ever Wellness Fair. That was in January, before the pandemic. Now, the Wellness Fair has been reimagined for the virtual world of COVID-19 precautions. It’s scheduled for Saturday, November 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it will be held on Zoom.

Swarthmore has many options for walks and hikes within its borders. A new series of maps can help you find your way. The Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association’s Walks and Trails Committee, chaired by Carol Menke, has documented traditional local walks and added some new ones. Working with Tara Cannon, Swarthmore College ’20, a Green Advocate with the Office of Sustainability, the committee mapped walks and trails on the AllTrails app.

On Saturday, March 28, the Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association and the Borough of Swarthmore will present the Third Annual Senior Wellness Fair — same time as last year, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., and same place, the Inn at Swarthmore. This year’s theme: Benefits and Challenges. Swarthmore citizens of every age will have the opportunity to hear from distinguished experts in the field of elder health and well-being.
The Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association (SSCA) Sidewalk Committee met in June with Borough Manager Jane Billings and Ross Schmucki, chair of council’s Public Works Committee, to discuss sidewalk regulation and repair. Homeowners in the borough are responsible for maintaining their own sidewalks, and the borough code is precise in its specifications. At the same time, repairing a sidewalk can be expensive. Getting rid of the sidewalk permit fee was a recommendation of the SSCA. Was it approved?
Starting this Wednesday, June 19, members of the Swarthmorean Senior Citizens Association are invited to meet informally each Wednesday around 2 p.m. at the Swarthmore Co-Op during summer. This is a change to the venue originally chosen and published in last week’s Swarthmorean (although Hobbs would surely still be delighted to see you at other times).
