SSCA and PAC— Great Together!

The Boards of Directors of the Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association and the Park Avenue Community Center join in announcing the Senior Association as a Founding Partner in a new Community Center for Swarthmore and surrounding communities. The Senior Association will donate $100,000 toward the establishment of the PAC Center and will subsequently make the Center its permanent home.

Our Community Walks Together

Come out at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 13 (rain date is November 20), for a series of organized and guided walks around town and the area, concluding with a concert and lots of camaraderie back on the lawn at the Swarthmore United Methodist Church, where we will be entertained by the Last Chance Duo.

Take a Hike! An App for Swarthmore Walks and Trails

Swarthmore has many options for walks and hikes within its borders. A new series of maps can help you find your way. The Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association’s Walks and Trails Committee, chaired by Carol Menke, has documented traditional local walks and added some new ones. Working with Tara Cannon, Swarthmore College ’20, a Green Advocate with the Office of Sustainability, the committee mapped walks and trails on the AllTrails app.

An Appalachia Bluegrass Thank You

Everyone is invited to enjoy a free concert of bluegrass and Appalachian mountain music this Sunday, October 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. It will be held at the Swarthmore Borough Hall Amphitheater and will feature Noggin Hill, an authentic bluegrass, mountain, and country music band, incorporating musical elements of folk-jazz and the American songbook. The concert is a big “thank you” to the Swarthmore community for the assistance given to the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) this year, and the work done in Chavies, Kentucky, making homes there warmer, safer, and drier.

The Hunt For a Vacation Home

The idea of a second home — at the shore, on a lake, or in the mountains — has a certain appeal. But my husband Greg Brown and I have studiously avoided purchasing such a place, thinking that once we do, we’ll be stuck going to that same place over and over again instead of travelling. However, that doesn’t keep us from checking out the real estate in fun places we visit! This summer we made a car trip to western North Carolina where we did look at some homes, in case we ever change our minds.

ASP Plans to Go South Twice this Summer

The Wallingford-Swarthmore area is full of people who want to make a difference in the world. Volunteering seems to be in our DNA, and another opportunity is opening up as we organize teams of young people and adults to Appalachia to work on making family homes “warmer, safer, and drier.” This year the trip promises to be even more meaningful, as members of our community plan their work to improve the lives of people in another community in Kentucky through the Appalachia Service Project (ASP).
