Accidents
On June 24 at 4:35 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Baltimore Pike and Oakdale Ave., for an accident that had just occurred. After evaluation, none of the drivers sustained any injuries. It was determined through investigation that the striking vehicle was traveling east on Baltimore Pike, in the outer lane of travel, approaching stopped traffic including a car directly in front of it. The striking car failed to stop in time, running into the rear bumper of the stopped car, and causing minor damage to both vehicles. Both cars were able to be driven from the scene.
On June 25 at 8:42 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Cornell Ave. for a hit and run motor vehicle crash. Officers were informed by the complainant that a white van was seen driving down Cornell Ave, striking the driver side of the complainant’s parked car. Witnesses described the driver exiting their van, checking the damage, then leaving the scene without making contact with anyone. The driver and vehicle were later identified, and all vehicle and driver information was obtained. There were no injuries as a result of this crash.
On June 28 at 10:19 p.m., Officers responded to the intersection of Swarthmore Ave. and Widener Way for a motor vehicle crash involving a struck deer. As the vehicle was traveling south on Swarthmore Ave. approaching the SEPTA tracks, a deer ran in front of it. The driver attempted to stop, but was unable to before striking the deer. The operator advised that the animal got up after the collision, and ran off down the SEPTA tracks. The vehicle involved sustained minor damage and did not require a tow. Officers checked the immediate area of the SEPTA tracks and surrounding roadways for the animal, but were not able to locate it.
On July 3 at 2:48 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Fairview Rd. and Kendall Rd. (near Cornell Ave.) for an incident that just occurred. At the officers’ arrival, it was determined that a vehicle driving on Fairview Rd. was struck by debris thrown by a weed trimmer being operated by a homeowner nearby. The debris struck the windshield of the passing car, cracking the glass. There were no injuries as a result of this incident, and the vehicle in question was driven from the scene, without the need for a tow truck.
Medical Emergencies
Swarthmore Borough Police Dept. responded to 16 medical emergencies from June 24 to July 8. Officers assisted responding medics and the Swarthmore ambulance for a variety of medical calls.
Service Alarms
The Swarthmore Borough Police Dept. responded to 12 alarm calls from June 24 to July 8. These calls ranged from false burglar alarm, fire alarms, and panic alarms.
