Accidents
On June 19 at 10:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of S. Chester Road and Strathhaven Avenue for an accident that had just occurred. After evaluation, both drivers were found to have minor injuries. It was determined through investigation that the vehicle traveling on Strathhaven Ave. was attempting to cross over S. Chester Rd., when the other vehicle struck it in the passenger side door. As a result of the crash, both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
On June 21 at 4:17 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of S. Chester Rd. and Yale Ave. for a reported motor vehicle crash. It was determined that no injuries occurred due to the accident. Investigation indicated that a car in the westbound lane of Yale Ave. was stopped in the middle of the intersection, waiting to turn left to go south on S. Chester Rd. Another car traveling east on Yale Ave., according to witness statements, went through the solid red traffic signal to continue on Yale Ave. As this car was crossing the intersection, the other car attempted to make a left turn to head south on S. Chester Rd. Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and had to be towed from the scene.
Medical Emergencies
Swarthmore Borough Police Department officers responded to eight medical emergencies, assisting responding medics and the Swarthmore Ambulance for a variety of medical calls.
Service Alarms
The Swarthmore Borough Police Dept. responded to nine alarm calls ranging from false burglar alarm to fire alarms.
Update on Wrong-way Parking
Enforcement of the prohibition on wrong-way parking started on Saturday, June 1, after approximately 1.5 months of Swarthmorean and Nextdoor Swarthmore notices and placement of flyers on vehicles parked the wrong way, advising of the pending enforcement. The campaign is having an effect.
To give some points of reference, on the first night officers went out and placed flyers on cars, 128 cars were found parked facing the wrong way. On the second night officers placed flyers on cars, 18 cars were found parked facing the wrong way. Subsequent flyer distributions reached 6-15 cars on various days or nights.
Since ticketing began, officers have issued between 5-10 tickets per day.
