Reading and Rocking
To the Editor:
It was wonderful to read Chris Reynolds’s piece on the Stones concert at Lincoln Financial Field. I, too, was there, with a couple of girlfriends, and we were sitting in the nosebleeds as well — thankful for the protection from the rain, if finding Mick’s spoken words a little garbled from the windy distance at times! My first Stones concert, too. Mick and Keith were always fun to watch, even from that distance, and the songs were just riveting, played full-length with zest and strong beat — just like Chris said! What a fantastic concert — everyone swaying and singing, hearing thousands of “Whoo, Whoos” echoing through the night as “Sympathy for the Devil” played on. These septuagenarians are amazingly infectious!
My brother told me he saw the Stones in 1966, in Lynn, Mass., and a riot ensued. We didn’t riot on July 23, but we sure rocked! I also have always loved “Jumping Jack Flash” — since first hearing it 40 years ago on as a teenager in Boston — I played it over and over on my record player, too. The song provided much-needed, joyful clarity at the time, and still does!
