The dispatch reads: “311 Cornell Ave. for smoke in the residence, unknown where it’s coming from.” Firefighters arrived on scene to the odor of smoke in the basement—the origin of which was unknown. Investigation determined that the use of a grinder by the homeowner to cut a piece of pipe had created sparks that ignited exterior wood sheathing on the home. The smoldering wood was quickly extinguished and no further fire extension was discovered. Apparatus from Swarthmore, Garden City, Holmes, Morton-Rutledge, Brookhaven, and Media responded and remained at the scene for approximately one hour.
