Swarthmore Fire & Protective Association Report (November 15-28)

The dispatch reads: “311 Cornell Ave. for smoke in the residence, unknown where it’s coming from.” Firefighters arrived on scene to the odor of smoke in the basement—the origin of which was unknown. Investigation determined that the use of a grinder by the homeowner to cut a piece of pipe had created sparks that ignited exterior wood sheathing on the home. The smoldering wood was quickly extinguished and no further fire extension was discovered. Apparatus from Swarthmore, Garden City, Holmes, Morton-Rutledge, Brookhaven, and Media responded and remained at the scene for approximately one hour.

EMS 

The ambulance responded to 29 calls for medical assistance. These were to Swarthmore, Morton, Rutledge, Nether Providence Twp., Springfield Twp., and Ridley Twp. The calls were for a variety of emergencies including: respiratory emergency, cardiac arrest, hemorrhaging, fall w/trauma, syncopal episode, lift assist, abdominal pain, sick person, seizures, psychiatric, emergency, obstetrics, cerebro vascular event, change in mental status, head injury, suicide attempt, and nature unknown.

  • Swarthmore (2): 500 block of N. Chester Rd. for a smoke alarm activation and 731 Harvard Ave. for a smoke detector activation.

  • Nether Providence Twp. (2): 100 block of S. Providence Rd. for a zone 000 alarm and 800 Avondale Rd. for a communication room alarm.

  • Morton (1): 200 block of Main St. for a smoke detector activation.

  • Springfield Twp. (1): 725 S. Chester Rd. for an alarm malfunction.

Building Alarms

  • Ridley Park (2): E. Hinckley Ave. and Hinkson Blvd. for fire on the rear deck, and 600 block of N. Swarthmore Ave. for smoke coming from the eaves.

  • Nether Providence Twp. (1): 500 block of Wildflower Ln. for smoke odor in the master bedroom.

  • Glenolden (1): 200 block of S. MacDade Blvd. for possible burned food.

  • Swarthmore (2): 400 block of Strath Haven Ave. for possible chimney fire and 311 Cornell Ave. for smoke in the residence.

Elevator

Swarthmore (1): 500 College Ave. for an occupant stuck in the Parrish Hall elevator.  

Hazmat Alarm

Swarthmore (1): 200 block of Haverford Ave. for a carbon monoxide alarm sounding in the basement.

Vehicles

Morton (1): Yale Ave. for a white rental fuel truck crashing into a pole.
