As reported in last week’s Swarthmorean, the Wallingford-Swarthmore School Board meeting last Monday, February 11, was punctuated by an attempt by a resident named “Peter” to read into the record a victim’s impact statement by a WSSD female student who he says was raped by a male student. The latter is now involved in WSSD extracurricular activities, according to Peter. Neither Peter nor the school board divulged the names of the parties, and Peter was prevented from reading the impact statement into the record at the 2/11 meeting.
ASP Plans to Go South Twice this Summer
The Wallingford-Swarthmore area is full of people who want to make a difference in the world. Volunteering seems to be in our DNA, and another opportunity is opening up as we organize teams of young people and adults to Appalachia to work on making family homes “warmer, safer, and drier.” This year the trip promises to be even more meaningful, as members of our community plan their work to improve the lives of people in another community in Kentucky through the Appalachia Service Project (ASP).
Luminaria Fundraiser Lights up the Town
Members of the Wallingford-Swarthmore community, cast your minds back to the evening of Tuesday, January 1, 2019, and you should be able to picture how beautiful the streets looked, lined with glowing luminaria. Wallingford and Nether Providence neighborhoods that who recently joined Swarthmore in this annual event, some who light their luminaria on January 1 and some at other times over the holidays. Regardless of time or place, the fruition of the 2018-2019 Luminaria fundraiser was a beautiful sight. Now it is time to thank everybody involved and share with the community the success of the event.
Onward and Upward for Garnet and Their Coach K
Tarble Pavilion will be rocking this weekend with home court energy as the Swarthmore men’s basketball team hosts the Centennial Conference tournament for the third consecutive year. Following a regular season in which they had the conference’s best record at 15-3 (23-3 overall), the Garnet earned the #1 seed and will play Washington College in the second semifinal game on Friday, tipping off at 8 p.m. Winners of the semifinals meet at 7 p.m. Saturday for the conference title game.
