The Alternative Christmas Shop, a project of the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, offers the opportunity to purchase “gifts” that are actually (tax-deductible) donations in the gift recipient’s name, supporting any one of 23 local, national, or global charities, all of which have been vetted by the shop’s organizing committee.
For over 40 years this local church fair—traditionally held the first Saturday in October—has been a gathering place for the community. This year the fair will adapt to the moment by being held outdoors, in the large parking lot behind the church. People will still be able to sample aromas and flavors — either via controlled in-person shopping or curbside pickup — and catch up with friends and neighbors.
At their home game against Franklin & Marshall College on February 8, the top-ranked and undefeated Swarthmore College men’s basketball team was surprised to see a crowd of young fans decked out in matching Swarthmore College T-shirts cheering them on. It was not a school-organized event, just the effort of one passionate kindergarten teacher, her enthusiastic students, and their parents in support of No. 40, Nate Shafer ’20. Shafer started visiting Sheri Carney’s kindergarten class at Swarthmore Presbyterian Nursery Day School during his sophomore year, as part of an Introduction to Education course. He was only supposed to be there for one semester, but Shafer found himself inspired by Carney’s skill and her excitement for teaching.
Swarthmore Presbyterian Church (SPC) hosts its 41st annual Fall Fair on Saturday, October 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Celebrating fall with Swarthmore and the broader community since 1978, the event has become known for its bonanza bargains on everything from antiques and jewelry, to flea market treasures, handbags, toys and sports equipment, pumpkins and mums, furniture and a wide selection of books.
Andrea Hemmenway studied the music of Greece at a seminar on the island of Crete. A gifted musician with an inquisitive mind, she absorbed musical inspiration from everywhere, but was perhaps especially influenced by the Greek tradition which was part of her ethnic heritage, said her mother, Diana Sophocles Hemmenway, On Friday night, September 27, that music will ring out in the sanctuary of Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, as the Pharos Ensemble — a vocal and instrumental quartet — and pianist Konstantinos Papadakis come to Swarthmore to perform in a concert celebrating Andi’s life, five years after her passing.

For the past 48 years, Joyce Perry has taught music to every class at Swarthmore Presbyterian Nursery Day School (SPNDS,) from the “young threes” to the kindergarteners. When not perched at her seat at the piano, she could be found attending to her other responsibilities, including overseeing the “Earlybirds” before the start of the school day and the “Stay and Players” after. In some families, Perry has taught three generations.
Earlier this year, Swarthmore Presbyterian Church began a quest to find a new Minister for Christian Formation to help lead SPC’s youth and to support various needs of its broader congregation. After interviewing numerous worthy candidates, this spring an SPC search committee recommended Alex Evangelista. Alex accepted the call, and on Monday, June 17, began serving in the new position.
