Rotary Club of Swarthmore gathered for its annual recognition and installation ceremony - its first in-person event since March 2020 - where incoming president Dr. Kathryn Jones outlined ambitious goals for the coming year.
Bill Hale was selected to succeed Maria Zissimos as president of the Rotary Club of Swarthmore. Since retiring, he has devoted himself to volunteerism and community service. Mike Litka, General Manager of the Swarthmore Co-op, and Anita Barrett, Swarthmore Town Center Coordinator were named Vocational Service Award winners. Donna Francher is the Community Service awardee.
On July 30, the Rotary Club of Swarthmore made a grant of $1,000 to the Foundation for Delaware County, helping establish a fund known as “Growing with Families.” The fund will benefit participants in the Delaware County Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC), the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program and the Healthy Start project, now managed by the foundation.
On Thursday, June 13, the Rotary Club of Swarthmore installed its new officers and board members. Incoming 2019-2020 President Maria Zissimos, General Counsel for Chester Housing Authority, chose as a venue for the celebration the William Penn Homes development and its exciting new Red Brick Café, which has recently opened its doors to the community. A resident-propelled business, Amir’s Catering, provided a first class banquet experience in the heart of this Chester community.
Two Strath Haven High School seniors, Abigail MacPherson and Benjamin Wainfan, were awarded $5,000 Rotary/Women’s Club scholarships in May 2019. The scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate community service in keeping with Rotary’s motto of “Service above Self.” The students had a notable record of contributing to the community, either local or global.
In its 19th year celebrating the spirit of interdependence and shared success, the Swarthmore Rotary Club’s annual Fun Fair is shaping up to be better than ever. Kicking off down Park Avenue, The Swarthmore Rotary Fun Fair Parade will feature CADES students and teachers, the Strath Haven High School Marching Band as well as Scouts, civic leaders and charities. After the onstage celebration, Swarthmore will celebrate more charities, new sponsors, a whole host of new activities and fair favorites.
