Movie by SHHS Grad in Philly Fest

“Islander” was written and directed by Derek Pastuszek, who grew up in Swarthmore. His first short film, “Solitary,” finished a two-year festival run with a special screening at the White House in July 2016. Shortly after Hurricane Sandy, Pastuszek shot “Islander” on Long Beach Island in New Jersey, where his family once owned a home. Pastuszek credits the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District with nurturing his creativity.

With so many restrictions on meeting in person, virtual interaction has become a large part of our lives. Zoom calls and social media are how we stay connected. We know that the screen can’t really take the place of sharing space with people. But beyond being a lackluster substitute for time spent together without the aid of technology, are there dangers we should be aware of? The new documentary “The Social Dilemma” explores this question.

Delco Drive-In Movie Weekend

Four drive-in movies will be shown this weekend in Rose Tree Park. Geared to families, the series is “a fun and safe activity for residents of all ages,” according to Delaware County Councilwoman Elaine Paul Schaefer. “We’re excited to offer our residents a fun night out while still keeping them safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

An Unsung Medical Hero in Film at DCIS

On Monday, October 14, the Delaware County Institute of Science will host a free screening of HILLEMAN: A Perilous Quest to Save the World’s Children, a documentary produced by Medical History Pictures. The work done by Dr. Maurice Hilleman to develop vaccines is estimated to save eight million lives every year.

Movie under the Stars Begins August 2

The Swarthmore Co-op will present a summer Dinner and a Movie Night series, starting Friday, August 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. The grilling starts at 6; the movie more like 7, all on Lincoln Way by the Co-op. Admission costs $5 per kid and $10 per adult, with proceeds going toward needed refrigeration system repairs at the food market.
