Chester Children’s Chorus director John Alston and six teenaged sopranos are sitting under a canopy outside the chorus’s Park Avenue office in Swarthmore. Their metal folding chairs, draped with jackets and purses, are spaced 6 feet apart. This is only their second in-person rehearsal since COVID-19 shut them down in March. “When we shut down,” Alston recalls, “we were the best choir we’ve ever been. We had never sung with so much polish, understanding, and confidence.”
The Chester Children’s Chorus will kick off their 25th anniversary celebration with a fundraising gala at Swarthmore College on the evening of October 26. The festive event will include a cocktail reception followed by a seated dinner and both live and silent auctions. The evening will feature a special CCC performance and a special tribute to CCC founding board member Cordelia Delson.
Seniors are invited to a luncheon reception and a matinee performance of the Chester Children’s Chorus on Thursday, July 25. Luncheon begins at noon in the lobby of the Lang Performing Arts Center, and the concert at 2 p.m. in the adjacent Concert Hall of the Lang Music Building.
Nearly 120 members of the Chester Children’s Chorus are approaching the end of a five-week summer learning program conducted by CCC at a June/July camp session at Swarthmore College. In celebration of a semester of learning and growth, groups of campers will present poster sessions and performances from July 25 through Wednesday July 31, at the College.
