During the pandemic, many museums have used the downtime to reconfigure their galleries and facilities; the Brandywine River Museum is among them. It has reopened with new exhibitions, and their most recently installed is Ralston Crawford: Air & Space & War, a worthy perspective on a World War II artist.
“Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale” has been up for a few months at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, though many museum-goers have yet to venture out for a post-pandemic exhibition. This one is worth the effort.
After months of pandemic hibernation, Swarthmore Friends of the Arts will open its first exhibition of 2021 on Tuesday, June 15, in Swarthmore Borough Hall. Colorful works of art are popping up in Swarthmore’s public gardens. These totems, scarecrows, and other folk-art pieces are the work of the young children at Swarthmore Friends Nursery School. Adjusting to changes required by COVID-19, the school launched an outdoor-only program for the fall.
September through May, the List Gallery’s 1,200-foot space presents about a dozen exhibitions, featuring the college’s alumni (such as MacArthur Fellowship recipient Njideka Akunyili Crosby ‘04), emerging talents, and some of the leading artists of our time.
Opening next Thursday at the List Gallery of Swarthmore College will be two exhibitions running concurrently through December 15: “Jan Baltzell: Drawings” and “Sue Hettmansperger: Iterations: Painting and Collage.” Both artists will lecture about their work and engage in discussion on Thursday, November 7, at 4:30 p.m. in the Lang Performing Arts Center Cinema. A List Gallery reception will follow: 5:30–7:00 p.m. These events are free and open to the public.
Celebrate autumn, art, music, and the bounty of local food and drink on Saturday afternoon, October 19, in a new event at Community Arts Center in Wallingford. The Harvest Gathering, a partnership of CAC and LandArt Events Farm-to-Table Plein Air, celebrates the season from noon to 4 p.m. in a rain-or-shine event on the grounds of CAC at 414 Plush Mill Road (or in the Duke Gallery if it rains).
What’s that mega-amphibian outside the entrance to the Swarthmore Public Library? It’s the latest work of whimsical discovery by Swarthmorean and amateur paleontologist Eric Schaff, who says he has reconstructed an ancient giant frog. He emerged from his lab/workshop to discuss the creature.
School’s out, and hot summer activities and programs for students and adults have already begun.
On Sunday, May 5, works by 21 student artists from Strath Haven High School were displayed at the 2019 Congressional Art Competition Show for the 5th District of Pennsylvania. The show at Utility Works in Lansdowne featured 133 works created by students from 12 area high schools.
Artists age 18 or older who live in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District (including Swarthmore College students), are invited to participate in the 23rd Annual Swarthmore Artists Exhibition, to be held at Swarthmore Borough Hall throughout the month of June. Completed entry forms are due by Monday, May 27, and work to be exhibited will be accepted Monday, June 3, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Beginning this week, 16 Swarthmore College senior art majors who work in media including ceramic sculptures, paintings, photographs, architectural studies, and installation design will exhibit their work in seven small group shows at the college’s List Gallery.
