Something to Listen to: ‘Carrier’

Something to Listen to: ‘Carrier’

One of my favorite innovations of the last few years has been the explosion of podcasts and the availability of radio shows for download. A lot of them are just people talking, while others are highly produced.

The carefully crafted “Carrier” tells the fictional story of a Black long-haul truck driver and single mom who finds herself transporting something very strange in her reefer (“refrigerated trailer” to you). The creators — Qcode Media and writer/director Dan Blank — don’t even want you to think of this as a podcast, but rather as a scripted thriller using “immersive audio techniques that create a dimensional listening experience.”

Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo stars in this suspenseful seven-parter that’s a little bit sci-fi, a little dystopian, and utterly electrifying. I mostly listen to podcasts when I’m driving or doing chores around the house. While I binge-listened to this one, my kitchen got extremely clean.
