Horticultural Society and AME Church Team Up for Work Day
Wesley AME Church and the Swarthmore Horticultural Society are hosting a Garden Community Work Party on Saturday, November 7, to improve church grounds and create new outdoor gathering spaces in advance of the church’s 100th anniversary in 2021.
Community members are invited to roll up their sleeves and come join the fun from 9 a.m. to noon. Organized teams will weed, rake, and prune throughout church grounds and will plant a garden bed in the front of the building.
Wesley AME is located at 232 Bowdoin Ave. in the Historically Black Neighborhood of Swarthmore. In recent years, the church’s foundation has been deteriorating, prompting church leaders to launch fundraising efforts for repairs including drainage improvement. Customers at the horticultural society’s recent spring-blooming bulbs sale donated more than $300 toward the effort.
The Garden Community Work Party will help improve the land around the church to ease drainage while also beautifying the grounds for congregants.
