Beverly Hammond

Longtime Lincoln County, New Mexico, resident Beverly Hammond died peacefully in her sleep on August 10, 2019. The only daughter of Foster and June Putney, Beverly was born and raised in Denver, Colo. After college and a career with United Airlines, she married and raised a family in Swarthmore, Pa.

Frederic L. Pryor

Frederic L. Pryor, a former long-time resident of Swarthmore, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2019 at White Horse Village in Newtown Square, where he had lived for the previous 11 years. He was 86 years old.

Laurance A. Luder

Laurance A. Luder of Media, Pa., formerly of Swarthmore, died on Friday, August 2, 2019. He was 71.A 1966 graduate of Swarthmore High School, he spent the majority of his career with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, and was the manager of facility safety at the time of his retirement. At Wyeth he met his wife Mary. They would have celebrated 43 years of marriage on August 7. Larry was a third generation Swarthmorean and lived in the borough until 2016. Passionate about serving his community, he joined the Swarthmore Fire and Protective Association at the age of 19.

Edgar Rosenthal

Edgar Rosenthal of Philadelphia and Swarthmore died on July 30, 2019, in Philadelphia. Edgar was born in Berlin, Germany, on August 15, 1929. After the Nazi takeover, his family moved to Amsterdam and then to West Philadelphia.

Margery A. Shaffer

Margery Anne Shaffer passed away unexpectedly on July 26, 2019 as a result of injuries sustained in an accident on July 24. Marge, born on October 9, 1930 to Joseph Burkley and Pearl Barnes in Pittsburgh, Pa., was the middle of their five children.

James Stoddard Hayes

James Stoddard Hayes, age 95, died peacefully in his bed at the Morningside House, Parkeville, Maryland, on July 24, 2019. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (“Libby”) Nicholson Garrett Hayes; his three children, James Stoddard Hayes, Jr., Katharine Hayes Armitage, and Curtis Woods Hayes; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Logan

Mary Elizabeth Logan, a resident of Swarthmore, passed peacefully on June 25, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Colonel George and Estelle Logan of Swarthmore. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James and George.

John J. Eisch, Ph.D.

John “Jack” Joseph Eisch, PhD, 88, died suddenly at his home in Vestal, N.Y., on June 29, 2019.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan (Scheuerell) Eisch, whom he first met in kindergarten; three daughters, Karla Eisch of Vestal, N.Y., Paula Cichon and her husband Doug of Loudonville, N.Y, and Amelia Eisch, Ph.D. and her husband Shae Padrick, Ph.D. of Swarthmore; his son, Joseph Eisch and his wife Robin of Silver Spring, Md.; two grandchildren, Taylor Anne Cichon and Zachary Eisch Padrick; and many nieces and nephews.

Elma Jones

Elma Jones of Wallingford passed away peacefully on June 26, 2019 at the age of 72.

Elma was the loving wife of George J. Jones, Jr.; beloved mother of Anamarie Jones, Cristy Stack, and Stephanie Jones; and dear grandmother of Matthew Jones-Blisard, Madeline Jones-Blisard, Maxwell Jones-Blisard, Maryn Jones-Blisard, Hunter Stack, Brayden Stack, Peyton Stack, Trent Stack, and Gabrielle Jones-Warner.

Shirley D. Tallent

Shirley Dorothy Tallent died at her home in Plush Mills Senior Living in Wallingford on June 13, 2019. She was 91. A longtime resident of Northampton, Massachusetts (1959-2013), she was born in Springfield, Mass., on July 6, 1927, the second of four children of Leah and Carl Rudman. Her sister, Ruth, and brothers, Seymour and Harold, predeceased her.

Dr. Benjamin J. Gaieski, M.D.

Dr. Benjamin Joseph Gaieski, M.D., born Bronislav Joseph Gajewski, in Salem, Mass. on May 29, 1921, died peacefully in Philadelphia, Pa. on June 11, 2019 at age 98. He grew up in Peabody, Mass. and played high school football, baseball, and basketball before matriculating at Tufts University in Somerville, Mass. He was the starting catcher on Tufts’ varsity baseball team for three years and fast-tracked through an undergraduate degree in biology and medical school so he could become a doctor in the Navy during World War II.

Mary Catharine Mulvihill

Mary Catharine Mulvihill, 94, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019. She had been residing at Maris Grove Retirement Community in Glen Mills, Pa., since 2008. Prior to Maris Grove, Mary Catharine and her husband, John J. Mulvihill, had lived, flourished and raised their family together for 53 years in Swarthmore.

William J. Hickey

William Joseph Hickey, a health professional and former 43-year resident of Swarthmore, died on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Riddle Village in Media, where he had resided for the last two years. He was 83.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Catherine (Gannon) and James Hickey, Bill Hickey spent most of his youth in San Antonio, Texas. He started working when he was 14 and never stopped until a few years ago at his retirement. He was a quiet man of great integrity and intelligence.

Alfreda Anderson, wife of the late Alfred Anderson of Swarthmore, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2019, at the age of 96. Alfreda was the daughter of Alfred and Mary Hyett of Lydney, Gloucestershire, England, and the eldest of five children.

Michael A. Snyder

Michael Andrew Snyder, 67, formerly of Purcellville, Va., and Pittsburgh, Pa., passed away May 18, 2019, at Peter Becker Community in Harleysville, Pa., where he had resided since 2016. He and his wife, Maggie (Schilling) Snyder, would have observed their 42nd wedding anniversary on May 22 of this year.
