Margery Bromley Lauber died peacefully at her home in Swarthmore on August 31, 2021, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 80.
A beloved Quaker educator, Margery taught at The Friends School of Haverford for nearly 30 years. Many generations of students learned to read and to treasure books in her classroom, and by working with her as a reading tutor. She was a voracious reader, an enthusiastic member of the Strath Haven Condominium book club, and a devoted patron of the Swarthmore Public Library, frequently visiting with her grandchildren.
A longtime member of Swarthmore Friends Meeting, Margery also considered Providence Friends Meeting a spiritual home. Margery found peace in nature while walking in the Swarthmore College woods. In the past few years, she devoted herself to environmental advocacy, especially regarding the climate crisis.
Margery will be remembered for her quiet strength, intelligence, creativity, zany sense of humor, and desire to see the world from a place of empathy and compassion. She leaves behind two daughters, Sara Moses and Kate Kline; their spouses (Mike and Zac); and her four cherished grandchildren, Ava, Owen, Miles, and Phoebe.
A memorial service celebrating Margery’s life will be held outside the Swarthmore Friends Meeting House on Saturday, October 16, at 2 p.m., with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Swarthmore or Providence Friends Meetings or the Swarthmore Public Library.
