Carolyn Morse Jones
Carolyn Morse Jones of Newtown Square passed away on October 30th, with her family by her side. She was 92.
Born on February 17, 1929, in Philadelphia, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Daniel and Katherine Morse. She grew up in Swarthmore and graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1947. She then attended Duke University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1951. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Immediately after college, she married Richard L. Jones Jr., her childhood sweetheart, with whom she spent 70 happy years. They lived in various states while Dick was in the navy, eventually settling in Wallingford, where they raised their children. In 1975, they moved to Swarthmore, and in 2008 to White Horse Village in Newtown Square.
Carolyn was a kind, dear person who devoted her life to caring for her family. She had many interests, including a love of gardening. Her passion for plants led her to volunteer for many years at the Philadelphia Flower Show. A long-time member of Providence Garden Club, she served as its president from 1988 to 1990. Besides having a lovely garden, she excelled at arranging flowers and designing container gardens. She enjoyed painting early American decorations, travelling, and boating on Chesapeake Bay—and she was a great lover of books. For many years, she also played in a recorder group.
Carolyn is survived by her husband; her daughter Elizabeth Jones of Swarthmore; various nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends. She was predeceased by her son Gordon and her sisters, Mary and Anne.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Scott Arboretum, 500 College Avenue, Swarthmore, PA 19081. Arrangements: Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home.
