I would like to thank Swarthmore College, and professors John Caskey and Hansjakob Werlen in particular, for inviting the Making A Change Group to contribute to the college’s current Lifelong Learning series, “Towards an Economy of Distributive Justice.” The classes in this free, online series focus on different forces that perpetuate economic disparities, especially along racial and ethnic lines. The series also offers resources for participants interested in activism and volunteerism.
Although we were in full support of Swarthmore College’s decision to close its campus to visitors, my husband and I were also saddened, especially since a piece of the Crum Woods lies just behind our home. Imagine my surprise to learn recently that this beloved patch of earth is no longer a part of the Crum Woods! A check of the Delaware County website shows that the property was sold by the college in March of this year.
There is a special place where the Magic of Swarthmore meets the Magic of Christmas. Every other year, in our small college town tucked away at the southern end of Delaware County, anonymous members of the Swarthmore community produce, fund, and perform the Pageant of the Nativity the Saturday before Christmas in the Lang Music Building on the Swarthmore College campus.
At last Thursday’s Swarthmore Rotary Club luncheon meeting at the Inn at Swarthmore, I was fascinated by the presentation by Greg Brown, V.P. for Finance and Administration at Swarthmore College. Greg discussed the present and upcoming construction projects at the College.
The time for climate action is now. According to the most recent UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, human society has only 12 years to curb the catastrophic effects of climate change.
