The courage to speak out

To the Editor,

I write to express my agreement with the letters published in the May 21 edition of The Swarthmorean regretting the termination of Satya Nelms’ tenure as associate editor. I admire her courage and patriotism for writing that she has no interest in returning to “normal” — the normal of systemic racism and white supremacy that have disgraced the American flag for hundreds of years prior to the pandemic and the public murder of George Floyd.

Folks like Satya who speak out for social justice are always targeted by those who are wedded to a status quo which is morally indefensible, and by those who seek to silence the voices that refuse to accept quietude erected upon a foundation of injustice. But for every person who is silenced, there are many others who feel the shame of their own silence, and who resolve to screw their courage to the sticking place and speak out.

Satya has planted a seed, and it will grow.
