To the Editor:
I’m writing to express my deep disappointment regarding The Swarthmorean publishers’ decision to privilege “fun” content over articles highlighting voices, histories, and issues that our town paper has long overlooked.
Under Rachel Pastan’s leadership, The Swarthmorean grew into essential reading for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of our community. Rachel and former associate editor Satya Nelms contributed insightful, thought-provoking pieces that compelled me to ask how we — the residents of Swarthmore — can do better, particularly with respect to issues of racial and social justice.
Rachel and Satya set the stage for all of us to do the important and sometimes uncomfortable work of listening — a key component of allyship. I’m grateful for their leadership, courage, and vision in a time when some locals would prefer to simply make The Swarthmorean “fun” again.
Sincerely,
Dilruba Ahmed
