One way to fight climate change
To the Editor,
I know that many of us in Swarthmore are concerned about the issue of climate change and hope the new administration and Congress will address this problem. Although I’ve felt overwhelmed when learning about climate change, it’s empowering to find ways to fight back, such as by calling our elected officials.
Recently, I’ve had the exciting opportunity to participate in the Delaware County chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby. This grassroots organization meets with Congressional members of both parties to raise support for a bill that would implement a carbon pricing policy called “carbon fee and dividend.” The bill would impose a gradually increasing tax on fossil fuels to drive a reduction in emissions, offsetting the resulting costs by sending a monthly “dividend” to taxpayers.
It’s been very rewarding to meet on Zoom with the friendly members of this organization and attend lobbying meetings with Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon and Senator Pat Toomey’s office. If you’d like to contribute to these efforts, you can go to citizensclimatelobby.org to join our chapter or simply sign up for our monthly calling campaign.
Thanks for reading, and let’s work together for a more livable future!
