To the Editor,

Readers of the Swarthmorean may have noticed the signs with a timely public health message that have been popping up in yards all over Swarthmore.

The signs read: “COVID-19* Follow the Science* Save Lives.”

I am part of a team of concerned citizens from neighboring Media Borough who purchased the lawn signs with our own money and have been distributing them to neighbors throughout Delaware County. We are delivering the signs right to the front doors of folks who order one.

In Swarthmore, a doctor, an executive director of a local health foundation, and an educator are among the borough residents who decided to plant a sign on their front lawns.

Why did these highly educated individuals take this step?

As a graduate of Swarthmore College and former owner of the Jumping Cow Ice Cream and Coffee House once located at the Swarthmore train station, I believe I understand the culture of Swarthmore well enough to speculate that some residents might question how grass lawn messaging could impact public health outcomes.

However, with national, state, and, yes, Delaware County elected officials sending mixed messages about following public health recommendations, we decided that ordinary people could help by reinforcing those messages, and that yard signs were one way to reach a few dozen, or a few thousand, people, depending on the location of one’s yard.

If you are interested in ordering a “Follow the Science” lawn sign, email terry@greenseedsgrants.com or call 484-326-1370.
