Bring the music back
To the Editor,
As musicians who lost all our scheduled jobs as a result of COVID-19, we’ve been watching with interest and caution as businesses and services begin to take small, careful steps to reopen operations safely. Among our cancelled musical performances were some scheduled appearances at farmers’ markets throughout the area. As these markets begin to reopen with appropriate restrictions, we encourage them to consider resuming live music.
Our performances travel through the air, using speakers, and don’t require listeners to gather or undertake any risk. Performers can position themselves properly at a safe distance away from the vendors and customers. We can use appropriate barriers, like cones or tapes, and monitor the stage area to ensure audience safety at all times.
A farmers’ market without live music is still worthwhile, but adding this dimension changes the mood and multiplies the fun for everyone involved. Let’s resume live music at farmers’ markets in a responsible and safe manner and show shoppers and merchants how celebratory the return of the market can be.
