To the Editor:
Our climate is changing, and we need to take action now to adapt to these new conditions and reduce our contributions to future warming. It’s encouraging to see bold proposals like the Green New Deal under discussion by legislators at the federal level, while many of us try to lower our individual carbon footprint every day.
There are also critical opportunities for action in between federal legislation and individual efforts that can make a real difference. From regional bipartisan initiatives to cut power plant emissions to state legislation that would reduce single-use plastics and styrofoam, we can make tangible progress towards protecting the environment. Here in Delaware County, we have an immediate need to reduce air and water pollution stemming from wastewater treatment, power generation, and incinerator facilities, which have led to serious health problems for our neighbors in Chester.
Next week, Indivisible Swarthmore: Moving the Needle will host a discussion with Thomas Fogel from Penn Environment and Zulene Mayfield from Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL) about these regional environmental issues and the path towards positive change. We welcome everyone to join us at Trinity Episcopal Church in Swarthmore at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, to learn more.
Sincerely,
Jayatri Das
