Report from the Fire Company July 14-28

Swarthmorean Tony Addison sent this photo of Swarthmore police and firefighters on the scene of a two-car collision on Tuesday at Yale and Cornell avenues in Swarthmore, where, he wrote, a hedge can obscure drivers’ view of eastbound traffic on Yale as they head north on Cornell. He noted that a similar collision occurred there just three months ago on April 29.

From July 14 through July 28, 2019, the Swarthmore Fire & Protective Association responded to the following alarms:

EMS

The ambulance responded to 32 calls for medical assistance. These were to Swarthmore, Rutledge, Morton, Springfield, Ridley Township, and Nether Providence Twp. The calls were for a variety of emergencies including: fall w/ trauma, respiratory difficulty, cardiac emergency, head injury, accident w/ injury, medical alarm, syncopal episode, back injury, unconscious person, semi-conscious person, hemorrhaging, dead on arrival, cerebro vascular event, change in mental status, fracture, assault victim, and tachycardia.

Automatic Fire Alarm

Three alarms in Swarthmore, in the 200 block of Elm Ave. for an automatic fire alarm activation, at 111 S. Chester Rd. for a 2nd fl. automatic fire alarm, and in the 400 block of Yale Ave. for a hallway smoke detector activation. Three alarms in Nether Providence Twp., on the 200 block of Rogers Ln. for an automatic fire alarm sounding, on the 100 block of N. Providence Rd. for a 1st floor smoke alarm, and on the 900 block of Twyckenham Rd. for a foyer smoke alarm.

Automobile

One alarm on Tuesday, July 30, in Swarthmore (see photo): Firefighters were called to an “accident with entrapment” at Yale & Cornell aves. A black SUV on Cornell Ave., attempting to cross Yale Ave., had been struck by another vehicle traveling east on Yale Ave., with such force that the black SUV overturned. The SUV driver extricated himself by the time firefighters arrived and was treated for minor injuries. Both vehicles required towing.

Elevator

One call to Nether Providence Twp. at 800 Avondale Rd. for a female stuck in the elevator on the 4th floor.

Building

Two in Swarthmore, on the 100 block of College Ave. for an odor of smoke in the house and the 300 block of Dickinson Ave. for an odor of something burning in the area. One alarm each in Nether Providence Twp. – 300 block of Media Parkway for a stove on fire; Springfield Twp. – 1200 block of East Woodland Ave. for a building fire; and Morton – 100 block of Linden Ave. for a lightning strike and the smell of smoke in the attic.

Wires

Two alarms in Swarthmore, for wires down with hazards at Chestnut & College aves., and for loss of power & hazards out front on the 300 block of Dartmouth Ave. Three alarms in Morton, for wires down at Sycamore & N. Morton Ave. and in trees on the 400 block of School St. for wires down in the trees, and for a transformer smoking in the rear on the 100 block of Fairhill Rd. Another transformer fire was called in from Marietta & Michigan aves. in Ridley Twp. for a transformer fire.

Hazmat

Two in Nether Providence Twp., on the 200 block of Wisteria Ln. for a carbon monoxide alarm, and the 100 block of Glen Rd. for a carbon monoxide alarm in the laundry room. One alarm each in Parkside – 2900 block of Arlington Ave. for a natural gas leak inside and Springfield Twp.– 400 block of Briarhill Rd. for a 2nd fl. bedroom carbon monoxide alarm.

Four to Morton/Rutledge, six to Nether Providence Twp., three to Springfield Twp., and one each to Parkside and Ridley Twp.
