Swarthmore Professors Adapt to Online Learning

The Swarthmore College website proclaims that its community “thrives on open dialogue, shoulder-to-shoulder discovery, face-to-face exploration.” This approach, as well as the 8-to-1 student to faculty ratio, has helped the college garner a reputation as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. But its hands-on, intimate learning had to be modified once the college transitioned to remote learning.

Cummerbund for Honeybun

A lot of guys have let themselves go during the pandemic. Gray roots, unkempt nails, bellies flopping over the waistband of baggy sweatpants. But not this guy. Whatever it takes, no matter what kind of crazy the world throws my way, nothing comes between me and looking good for my Lady Love. How good? Well, fellas, do you come down to breakfast every morning dressed in a tuxedo – the one you wore on your wedding day?

Wallingford Man Dies in House Fire

A 69-year-old Wallingford man perished in a house fire on Wednesday, June 3. The house, in the 300 block of Morris Lane, caught fire in the wake of a powerful thunderstorm, according to Garden City Fire Chief Patrick O’Rourke. The alarm was called in by a neighbor, he said.

Gardening With Deer

About 20 years ago, the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College started to see plantings destroyed by deer. Today, I would guess most homes and gardens in the borough have experienced browsing deer. Many of you have deer devastating your plantings. The ultimate solution to protecting your garden from deer is to fence them out.

WSSD and Community Respond to Racist Video

Wallingford-Swarthmore School District Superintendent Lisa Palmer reported in an email to WSSD families on Sunday that “a hurtful and disturbing video...is circulating within our community.” School district officials forwarded the video to the Nether Providence Police Department on Thursday, May 28. The department is investigating. Chief David Splain said that the results of the investigation will be presented to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office to determine if a crime was committed and whether to file charges.

Spiderweb

There’s a spider living in the holly bushes outside my house. Every night, it spins a web across my front path. When I go out to walk the dog before sunrise, I run straight into the sticky, invisible threads. This time of year, though, the sun rises early, and I can see the web. That’s how I’ve been thinking about the short racist video that’s been circulating through our community this week and about the many videos over the last months and years showing black people dying at the hands of white people, often police.

Coming Back...Carefully

What will the Swarthmore business district look like this summer? That was the question local merchants discussed at a May 27 Zoom meeting with members of the non-profit organization Swarthmore Town Center (STC) and Mayor Marty Spiegel. With Delaware County slated to move from the red phase to the yellow phase of reopening on June 5, business owners are trying to figure out how to proceed.

New Due Dates, New Procedures for Library

Once the Delaware County moves into the yellow phase of reopening on June 5, staff will begin to work on-site again. No more than three staff will work in the building at one time. The Swarthmore Public Library will begin accepting returns on Monday, June 8, says director Amber Osborne. Materials will be quarantined for 72 hours, then checked in. Patrons will be able to check out materials beginning on or around June 16.
