What’s that old Petula Clark song? “When you’re alone and life is making you weary, you can always go…” To the ’Ville! At least that’s the way it’s sung in Swarthmore, where a plurality of respondents to Unscientific Survey No. 4 reported using that name for the central part of town.
The Swarthmore Borough Human Relations Commission (HRC) is expanding and looking for additional members to serve our community. The HRC was originally established by ordinance in 2006 to respond to complaints regarding discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identification, as these are not protected by the state’s anti-discrimination laws. Swarthmore Borough Council recently amended the ordinance to include the ability to provide education and outreach to prevent discrimination and address incidents of bias that may lead to tension between racial, ethnic, and other groups. To address this larger scope, more members are needed.
Twenty-three years ago, $13,000 was all the annual operational support the Swarthmore Fire & Protective Association needed from the Borough of Swarthmore. Today, that need has ballooned to $240,000. The reason? Payroll expense.

An unnamed researcher recently turned up a hitherto unknown document pertaining to the so-called Biddle Tract in Swarthmore. The document may sow further confusion regarding the restrictions on development of commercial new cell properties in the heart of Swarthmore‘s commercial district.
