2021 Summer Travel: Vacationing in Iceland
My husband, Jim Greer, and I, joined by a cousin from Kansas City, spent nearly two weeks in Iceland (July 24-Aug. 4) on a vacation delayed a year by COVID. Our small group tour included some very cold days, with heavy winds and rain (a high of 48F one day), but also a few days of bright sun and temperatures in the upper 60s in the north, around Akureyri (a heat wave, they said!).
This was a land of great beauty and highly varied terrain—from barren lava fields to fishing villages, cliffs and “Game of Thrones” backdrops; from lush moors and valleys to spectacular waterfalls, and from geysers and geothermal vents on what looked like desert moonscape (and where astronauts trained) to glaciers atop of volcanoes that required off-road travel to walk upon.
The trip ended with a visit to the Blue Lagoon, which was not as crowded as it can be. We booked a couple of dining destinations before we went, and the seafood and lamb were fantastic—the fermented shark is (ahem) something that tourists try once.
