Young People’s Theatre Workshop Retakes the Stage This September
“Take the stage, hear the applause, feel the effect of the colored lights. Take the stage, the curtain’s going up, it’s opening night.” These are lyrics from the song written for the Young People’s Theatre Workshop (YPTW) by Bree Lowdermilk, Kait Kerrigan, and YPTW campers in 2009. This excitement is what we have missed during the past year and a half. Although we have continued to create theater on Zoom through classes, three musical productions, and cabarets, we have missed the immediacy of the theater.
On September 11, Young People’s Theatre Workshop will return to in-person classes for its 43rd year of training young actors at The Players Club of Swarthmore. We will follow Covid-19 protocols and continue to make our students’ safety our number one concern. But we will be together—acting, dancing, and singing together. Classes take place on Saturdays from September 11 through October 30.
We will then bring the joy of Annie Jr. to our younger actors in Grades 2-8. This workshop will rehearse in November and the show will be performed at the Swarthmore-Rutledge School in December.
Following our winter semester of classes from January 8 through February 26, we will take to the seas with our swashbuckling production of the Joseph Papp version of The Pirates of Penzance. This show will sail on the PCS stage at the end of May.
