Head coach Landry Kosmalski of Swarthmore College number one-ranked men’s basketball team has been named the 2019-20 National Coach of the Year, the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced on March 20.

Kosmalski is the first men’s basketball coach in the history of the NCAA’s Division III Centennial Conference to ever earn this distinction.

The Garnet were ranked first overall in the nation for the entire season by D3hoops.com’s Top 25 poll of Division III schools, featured on the NCAA website. Swarthmore had completed a perfect regular season, finishing 28-1, and had advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen before the NCAA tournament was cancelled.

In his eight seasons at Swarthmore, Kosmalski has posted a record of 153-74 (a win percentage of .674). His winning percentage has increased each season, and in each of the past five seasons, the team has won at least 22 games. Prior to Kosmalski’s arrival at Swarthmore, the Garnet had never won more than 17 games in a season, and had never participated in an NCAA Tournament game.

The Garnet head coach has also been honored as the District/Region Coach of the Year three times, and as the Centennial Coach of the Year four times.
