Huge Week, Great Variety of Music at Swarthmore College
The coming week brings a rich array of musical performances to Swarthmore College and its community, beginning Friday, September 20, with the chamber ensemble Music from China. Beginning at 8 p.m. at Lang Concert Hall, the group will play new and traditional Chinese music from and eclectic repertoire that includes works commissioned by some of the most celebrated contemporary composers.
Celebrating the International Day of Peace September 22, ARTolerance: Dialogue in Three Movements presents “an artistic journey of Israel/Palestine,” at Lang Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. The collaborative performance includes poetry, original songs, and music in western and middle eastern traditions.
On Tuesday, September 24, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Samir Chatterjee speaks on Indian music and culture, interspersed with performances on tablas. Joining this virtuoso on stage at the Troy Dance Studio at Lang Performing Arts Center will be Sanghamitra Chaatterjee and Rohan Misra, singing and playing in accompaniment of Swarthmore’s Kathak dance class.
Finally, on Thursday September 26, former Russian political prisoner Nadya Tolokonnikova brings the feminist punk collective and rock band Pussy Riot to Swarthmore. Tolokonnikova, as prominent an activist as she is a musician, will first speak and answer questions during a session from 7 to 8 p.m. at Science Center 101. Then at 9 p.m., she and other musicians take the stage as the fierce punk outfit Pussy Riot in Upper Tarble.
All these events are free and open to the community.
