Summer Learning
For Mark Wallace, Swarthmore College professor of religion, teaching continues in the summer, with a new set of students in attendance at a different venue for his lectures on July 8 and 16.
Wallace took part in a program called the Study of the U.S. Institutes on Religious Pluralism, sponsored by the Dialogue Institute at Temple University and by the U.S. Department of State. These five-to-six week SUSI academic experiences for groups of international undergraduate students and scholars, which aim, Wallace said, to promote a better understanding of American people, culture, and institutions.
In the photo to the right, Wallace (left) greeted members of SUSI following his talk on Native American spirituality (including the sacred hoop, sweat lodges, and the use of peyote,) the impact of settlement, and the continuing vitality of native cultures and religious practices.
