Make Music; Make Friends this Summer

Come join the band for great music-making this summer as part of the 38th Annual Summer Band and String School, conducted by top music educators from the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District at Strath Haven High School from June 24 through July 23.

The summer music program welcomes students from 3rd grade to 12th grade, beginning through advanced musicians, from within or outside WSSD. The program is intended for students aspiring to play any of the band or string instruments. Instruction takes place on Mondays through Thursdays, and includes small group lessons, large ensemble rehearsals for band, orchestra, jazz band, jazz improvisation, seminars and clinics.

Students are encouraged to register for the month-long program even if they will be away for a portion. Early bird discounts end May 31, but registration continues through June 23.

New this year (and free with instrumental camp participation) is Children’s Choir for students in 4th through 6th grade, which meets Monday and Wednesday mornings. Adults, too, are encouraged to come out and join students in the Community Concert Band, which meets Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at no charge.

The summer program culminates in a concert involving all camp participants, on the evening of Tuesday, July 23 at Strath Haven High School’s auditorium. Instructors include WSSD music department chair and Strath Haven Middle School instructor Henry Pearlberg, and SHHS music teachers and directors John Shankweiler and Nicholas Pignataro.

Fees, registration instructions, and more information is at wssd.org (search Summer Music). Further queries should go to Mr. Pearlberg at hpearlberg@wssd.org.
