Sidewalks Coming to Providence Road
The walkway along Providence Rd. (rte. 252) in Wallingford will receive a major upgrade thanks to a $500,000 state grant for sidewalk installation. State Representative Leanne Krueger (D-161) announced the grant from the Multimodal Transportation Fund to Nether Providence Township, stating, “This project will make our community more walkable and improve pedestrian safety, including for students in our region.”
“We are excited by the grant and appreciative of Rep. Krueger’s assistance in securing the funding,” says Matthew Sullivan, president of the Nether Providence Township Board of Commissioners, adding that the precise part of the roadway that will get a sidewalk is still to be determined. Construction is probably a couple of years away, Sullivan says.
Strath Haven High School, Strath Haven Middle School, and Wallingford Elementary School are all located along the busy state route. A narrow walkway along the side is widely used by children walking to and from the schools. The new sidewalk will be raised, separated from the street, and be ADA accessible, according to Krueger. The ultimate goal is to install a sidewalk along the entire length of rte. 252 from the Media line down to rte. 320. That larger project will cost approximately $3 million.
