YMCA to Take Over Healthplex
In January the Healthplex Sports Club will have a new owner and operator: the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County. The Healthplex, which offers work-out equipment, a swimming pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, children’s programs, and more, has been located at Springfield Hospital since 1996.
“We found a world-class organization that will carry on the Healthplex’s founding mission to make wellness accessible to this community,” said Crozer-Keystone CEO Sharif Omar. Springfield Hospital is part of the Crozer-Keystone Health System.
The Y is expected to make capital improvements to the health club, which some say has become rundown. It will expand programs for families and children, and offer programming for veterans, seniors, and people recovering from addiction.
“I think it is great news as the Healthplex equipment and space had become very outdated,” said Virginia Thompson of Swarthmore. “I hope they also do a very thorough cleaning and get rid of the carpet.”
The Healthplex expects fees to go down to YMCA rates over time. Current Healthplex employees will be interviewed for continued employment by the new owners.
The sports club says representatives from the YMCA will be on-site regularly until the transition to answer questions. More information about the YMCA of Eastern Delaware County is on their website.
